Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations fell dramatically during August. The useful lesson has less to do with Reddit itself and much more to do with the unpredictable way AI platforms choose their sources.

For much of the conversation around AI search, Reddit has occupied a privileged position. Its vast collection of real questions, candid recommendations and gloriously unfiltered opinions gives generative search systems something brand websites often struggle to provide: first-hand human experience at scale.
It was therefore noticeable when Reddit’s share of citations in ChatGPT Search reportedly fell from an average of 3.83% between 18 July and 7 August to just 0.52% between 14 and 17 August. That represents a drop of more than 86% in a matter of days.
The cause remains unclear. The data shows when the change happened, but it cannot tell us why. It may reflect a change in ChatGPT’s retrieval behaviour, a temporary adjustment in source weighting or an issue that becomes clearer as more evidence appears. Reddit may return to its former prominence just as quickly.
The temptation with changes like this is to announce the end of whichever channel has moved down the chart and immediately crown a replacement. GEO is developing too quickly for that sort of certainty to be useful.
Every platform has its own source preferences
The August fall was particularly sharp in ChatGPT. Google’s AI products showed smaller and more gradual changes, while other platforms continued to treat community sources differently. This mirrors OtterlyAI’s experiment with 2,000 AI-generated blogs, where identical content was rejected by Google and ChatGPT, rewarded by Bing and Copilot, and initially accepted before beginning to decline in Perplexity.
Passion Digital’s Future of Search 2026 briefing makes the same point from another angle. It reports that ChatGPT and Perplexity have historically drawn heavily on Reddit, while Claude behaves very differently and sends a much larger proportion of its citations to brand websites. LinkedIn is also emerging as an important source, especially for B2B and professional services searches.
A strong result on one platform therefore cannot stand in for an overall view of AI visibility. Brands need to understand where they appear, how they are described and which sources support those answers across the platforms their customers actually use.
Reddit still matters
A decline in visible citations does not make the conversations taking place on Reddit irrelevant. People continue to use the platform to share experiences, compare products and discuss the things brands would sometimes prefer them not to discuss. AI systems may still use those conversations in research even when Reddit is not shown as the final cited source.
The sensible role for Reddit has never been to provide a convenient place for brands to manufacture recommendations. Communities tend to spot that behaviour with impressive speed. Its value comes from genuine participation, customer understanding and the independent discussion that develops when a product or service gives people something worth talking about.
That value survives a movement in ChatGPT’s citation chart.
Authority needs more than one home
The wider lesson is that no brand should build its GEO strategy around a single third-party platform, AI engine or source type. Citation behaviour can change without warning, and businesses have very little control over the decisions made inside a generative search product.
Sustainable visibility comes from creating a consistent body of evidence across the wider web. The company website should explain the brand clearly and provide useful, structured knowledge. Named experts should contribute genuine insight through articles, interviews and LinkedIn. Customers should have opportunities to leave honest reviews and share their experiences. Relevant publications, directories, videos and community conversations can all reinforce the same credible picture.
This creates more routes through which an AI system can discover and understand the brand. It also produces better communication for the humans conducting the original research, checking an AI recommendation or deciding whether the company deserves their trust.
Passion Digital reports that 68% of Google searches now end without a click, yet the visitors arriving from AI platforms can be unusually valuable because they have already researched and compared their options. Visibility within the answer is becoming commercially important, even as the route into that answer remains volatile.
Reddit may move back to the front of the class next month. Another source may take its place. The brands in the strongest position will be those that have built enough clear, useful and independent authority to remain visible wherever the seating plan moves next.
